Sometimes I wish I had more patience

So, we had a parent teacher conference for Braedyn. He's in Kindergarten, so it wasn't really a big deal, just saying he's learning, and what level he's at. Come to find out, he's beyond Kindergarten level for reading. They send reading books home every week for the kids. They are always such a waste, and it takes Braedyn like 2 minutes to read an 8-10 page book. They are just way too easy for him, and he gets bored so quick. His teacher said at this point they want the kids at a level 1 reading level, and he is at a level 3. They don't expect them to be that good until at least the end of the year. So, to give the kid a bit of a challenge, he was sent home with 1st grade books. I've got to say, there is a huge difference! They are so much longer, and have a lot of more difficult words, with the more complicated rukes (such as the silent vowel at the end of the word, and how having the vowel at the end of the word makes the vowel in the center make a different sound). It has definitely been a challenge. Unfortunately, it takes him so long to read the books, we both get bored fast, and we have to work through the rest of the book. Maybe if I knew how to teach reading better, or if I had more patience, or something. Right now it kinda feels like he's never gonna get ahead. They want him to be at a level 5-6 by the end of the year. How is he gonna get there if he can't get past level 3 because his mom has no clue how to teach it to him.

Besides the reading, we have a few things we need to work on. First, handwriting. He makes a bunch of his letters backwards, and almost all uppercase. He rarely stays in the lines, and most people can't figure out his letters. I wish I knew how to teach penmanship. anyone wanna take on this challenge for me? My handwriting sucks too, so not sure how to make my child's handwriting legible.

The other thing we need to work on is math. He can count, and can recognize a lot of numbers up to 100. But, he's supposed to know addition and subtraction by the end of the year. Maybe I should invest in some of those counting bears. I liked those, and since he is a very hands on person, maybe that will help? Hopefully. Again, his dad and I are also terrible at math, so not sure how I can expect him to be very good at it. But I can try, right?

In short, I feel like a terrible teacher, with no patience. How do I teach a very active boy that can't sit still for more than 5 minutes these very important topics without boring him to death? I'm open to any ideas. I also have to find a way to involve the 2 year old in all our activities. Maybe whatever I do will help Brock be ready for Kindergarten when he enters it in 2013.
