I never knew how much I DIDN'T know...

...Until I had a 6-year-old. Sometimes this kid makes me feel so DUMB! What was the point of that Bachelor degree again? I thought it was supposed to mean I was SMARTER than a 6-year-old, and could answer all his questions about everything he asks (which is a LOT these days). Apparently, I didn't learn much during my school days. Or, maybe I've just forgotten, which tends to happen a lot.

Every day Braedyn is asking me so MANY questions about everything in the world, and many of them, I really have no idea how to answer. Every song we listen to he asks what words mean. Every time some one says something, he has something to ask about it. And when we do his homework? Well, sometimes I feel like a total dummy. Here are some examples of a couple of our conversations recently (as in within the past 2 days, because we all know I can't remember further back than that):

Braedyn: "Mommy, what does blocked mean?"
Me: "Ummm...it means blocked...or, uh, block? or uh....like u block something?" me thinking of how the heck to explain that word, what is something he can relate to? oh, sports...soccer, he played soccer. "Ok, I got it, u know how in soccer when someone tried to make a goal and u stopped it from getting in the goal? Well, that's what block means"

While helping with homework:
Braedyn had some tangrams, and had to color different shapes within it, and then say how many of each shape there were in it. I was taking him through each individual shape shown on his list to ask him how many there were of each. I would name each shape as we got to them saying "How many triangles are there? How many squares?" then we got to these shapes that I really was not sure what they were called. I've seen them before, but I never could remember the names of them. I'm a basic shape kinda girl. So, I say "how many of these are there?"
Braedyn: "you mean the parallelograms?"
Me: "Yeah, of course, how many parallelograms? and how many of these ones?"
Braedyn: "the trapezoids?"
Me: "yeah, trapezoids, just making sure you know the names"

I think it's time for me to go back to school and figure this stuff out again...

It's a New Year

I can't believe January is almost over, and I have yet to make a blog post. I know I've always been a bit of a procrastinator, and late for everything, and have a new baby taking up most of my prior free time, but still, that's no excuse. I really need to get better at this whole blog thing.

I was thinking this morning that I still have not set new year's resolutions. I typically like to avoid these because I am terrible at sticking to them. I figure if I have no goals, and accomplish something, then it was a successful year, right? :) Well, I've decided it's probably better to at least set goals and TRY to be better, so this year I am making some New Year's resolutions for the first time in I don't know how long (yay! already one goal met).

As I tried to remember 2010, I couldn't really rember a whole lot of what happened. I remember the people who lived with us moved out. I was miserably sick for a few months with pregnancy, but then had an overall great pregnancy. We had our 3rd baby, which was a HUGE transition that we are still trying to get used to. I experienced baby blues for the first time EVER, which was really hard on Erek. I changed jobs. And that is all I remember. Yes, eventful, but I know more happened than that. Maybe if I get better at my blog, I'll be able to remember those things more.

So, after realizing I don't remember anything, and life just always seems to fly by, I started making a list of what I want to accomplih this year. My list ended up being VERY long, so I picked just a few items to focus on for a start. So, here you have it, my New Years resolutions for 2011:

1) Be more active: work out at least 3 times a week, 30 minutes a day on the Wii Fit. When the weather gets warmer, go for a run every morning (not sure how far, depends on where I am at when that time comes, can't overdo it and end up in a wheelchair from the MS). With this goal I hope to be able to run a 5K by the end of 2012 (this year if I can keep my MS under control enough)

2) Be a better mom: I want to spend better quality time with each child. I don't really know how to accomplish these yet since Erek works when I'm off, so I don't have him here to help out. But I will figure it out.

3) Get organized: I feel like my life is just a big jumbled mess half the time. So, I am going to make schedules for each child, like I used to have. I am going to finish organizing my house, so I don't waste so much time trying to find things, or cleaning. I started this last year, and things have definitely gotten easier.

That's my list I'm going to start on. If that goes well, and I decide to add more, I'll do that later. But for now, this is all :)

Life Update

Can you believe it's been almost 5 weeks since our newest little guy was born? In fact, it will be exactly 5 weeks ago tomorrow that he made his grand entrance. Boy, have we been busy since then. Adding a third child is a HUGE adjustment...much bigger than adding the second child. I hear that the third is the hardest, and after that, it's a piece of cake. So, if we do happen to have any more children (depending on my MS) at least I have hope :)...

So, to start off, here's the birth story (the clean version :) ):

On Friday, November 5th, early in the morning, I started having some hard contractions, they just never really got closer together, so I pretty much ignored them as much as possible. For anyone who has ever experienced painful contractions, you know how "easy" it is to ignore them ;). During the night, they did finally start getting closer together, and more painful. So, on Saturday morning, at 7am, I woke Erek up and told him we gotta go to the hospital, we're having a baby. When we got to the hospital, my contractions were 3 minutes apart, lasting for like 30-60 seconds. Unfortunately, they weren't doing anything. I wasn't dilating at all, or effacing. But nothing would get the contractions to stop, so the Dr. knew they weren't braxton Hicks. He said I was defnintely in labor, but for some reason my body was not cooperating and doing what it's supposed to do. I do have VERY LONG labors, so this was no surprise to me (why do you think I waited for over 24 hours before going to the hospital.

After monitoring me for an hour, and nothing happened, my Dr. made the brilliant decision to give me pitocin to speed things along. However, since I was tested positive for the Group B Strep, they had to give me the antibiotic first. The antibiotic had to run for 4 hours before I could deliver, in order to have the best chance at preventing any problems. At 2pm, the 4 hours was up, and they were able to start the pitocin. They said to expect to deliver in the next couple of hours. At this point I mentioned to the nurse that there was a kink in the IV, and asked if that was going to cause any problems. She said it's fine, and shouldn't cause any problems with the IV. An hour later they came in, still no progress. So, the dr. broke my water to speed things along. Another hour, still no progress. Contractions were staying the same. They were more ainful, but not any closer together. At about 5pm, a second nurse saw that the Pitocin was not going in, so she started a new bag of pitocin, to see if there was a problem with the initial bag.I showed her the kink in the IV and asked if that was the problem. She said that wouldn't be the problem. At 7pm, still no progress. The third nurse came to check everything out, and figure out why the pitocin wasn't doing anything. She looked at the bag, and looked at the line. She found the kink and said "well, there's the problem". she unkinked the line to let the pitocin through and start doing what it's supposed to. About 2 minutes later the nurse came running in, and said she needed to move the heart monitor on our baby because she can't hear the heartbeat anymore. about 30 seconds later 2 more nurses and my OB came running in. They put an oxygen mask on me, turned me further onto my side, gave me a shot in my arm, and the dr. kept scratching the baby's head to get our little guy to move. They said the 5 hours worth of pitocin going into me all at once caused a 5 minute contraction, which cut off circulation to the baby, and stopped his heart. The shot they gave me was to stop the contraction. The Dr. was trying to get the baby to wake up, and get his heartbeat back. They said everything was prepped for an emergency C-Section, and may have to take our baby out in order for him to survive. As they were getting ready to take me to C-Section, our strong little guy finally came to, and they got the heartbeat back. I was so glad! What a tough baby we have! I really don't know how long this whole thing lasted. I was crying from pain (So glad I had an epidural at this point), and the thought that my baby may not make it, so didn't really watch the clock, but it seemed like FOREVER!

Once our little man was ok, they gave him an hour to recover, before starting the pitocin again. At 8pm, they started the pitocin, this time without the kinked line. Finally, shortly after 9:30pm, Dallen Ray was born. They couldn't get him to cry at first. after a bit of annoying the kid, he let out a little cry of "leave me alone, I'm sleeping" and that was it. After a little more of annoying him, he finally cried a bit more. Once they gave him to me, the crying stopped again, and he just chilled while they took his vitals, cleaned him up, and did all the newborn checking. He's still not much of a cryer. He cries in the evenings from his gas (he is a very gassy child), and he cries when he's hungry, tired, has a bubble, or is getting a diaper change. But for the most part, he is a pretty calm baby (at least compared to my other 2 children).

And that's Dallen's grand entrance, not one that will be easily forgotten. Now we are slowly adjusting to the demands of a baby along with the demands of a 3 and 6 year-old. Let's just say we are constantly busy at our house, and still have not had any free time to even setup our Christmas stuff. We are hoping to be able to do that tomorrow.

Other stuff that has happened since Dallen was born:
1) I had a birthday :)
2) We have spent many days at the lactation specialist for my lack of milk supply. Hoping 3rd times the charm for getting my body to produce more milk.
3) We went black friday shopping (of course)
4) Brock has started potty training (3 days so far of being dry, except for nap and bed)
5) I survived the baby blues :)
6) Braedyn is still being a trouble maker at school, but is doing great at reading (still not very good in spelling and math).

I think that's everything that has happened. However, I am going on just 3-4 hours of sleep a night, so things do tend to leave my mind very easily...

Life's questions

Once a week I make the drive into the office to work my shift from there. Yes, I do the same things I do at home, however, these are big review days, deciding which students do and do not get scholarships. So, it is very important that I put in my two cents ;). Once in a while I actually remember to take my own lunch on these days. Other times, I completely forget, and leave my lunch at home, making it so I have to make the walk across the parking lot to the Arctic Circle. The walk, not so bad...the spending money part, kills me! So, I make myself fell better about it by using coupons, and spending a maximum of $1.50 on a full meal (hamburger, fries, drink, and ice cream). Granted, the drink is ice water, but this is PERFECT cuz it gives me water for the hydration they keep saying I need, and ice to chew on for those frequent ice craving. Also, the ice cream is the courtesy cone that the super nice lady always goes around and gives to everyone. Which reminds me, if you have never been to the Arctic Circle just off 3900 S. and 700 E. you are TOTALLY missing out! There is an older lady there who is so friendly, who is in charge of cleaning the tables. However, she is so amazing, she makes you feel like you need to tip her. I may have mentioned this previously, but she really is awesome, and makes it so that is the only Arctic Circle I ever wanna go to.

So, this week, as I was sitting at my table at Arctic circle, there were these two older ladies sitting across from me. They were talking about high school memories (which totally made me laugh cuz they were at least in their 80s). and I thought, I wonder if I'm gonna reminisce about high school when I'm that old. I wonder if I'm gonna remember anything about high school when I'm that old. I wonder if I'm gonna live to be that old...and then I started wondering "what do retired people do with their time?" I think I am just gonna have to work till the day I die, or I might go crazy from boredom. My house would definitely be spotless and organized (not so much right now). But I am so used to having a full-time job, coming home and being booked with my kiddos schedules, and barely getting time to sleep before I start again the next day. I typically set aside 30-45 minutes a day for spot cleaning, so my house doesn't get out of control with 2 boys running around. But what if I had actual full days, for the rest of my life, with my children raised and on their own, no school, no work, no extracurricular stuff to take the boys to, nothing that makes my life insanely busy right now. What in the world would I do? I know people are always saying they can't wait till they can retire. But why? Do they plan on having a bunch of money to travel around the world? (cuz that would be awesome). If I could retire right now, having young children, then work when they were grown, I would totally be up for it! This work thing seems so backwards. However, I guess if it was reversed it would be like getting paid before actually doing the work. So, it does make sense. However, by the time you're old enough to retire, the craziness of your life is gone anyway. Maybe I'll spend the rest of my life babysitting grandchildren (assuming I have them). That would be fun. Or maybe we'll strike it rich, and get to travel the world (or at least the US), that would also be really fun. Of course, maybe I won't need to worry about it anyway, because by the time I'm old enough to retire, there will probably be no such thing...

Baby Update

Can you believe I am 36 weeks? That means only 4 more weeks till Due day. How did I get this far this fast? and that list of things I have to tackle Before our little guy gets here? Well, it's barely been touched. Maybe now that Braedyn is done with soccer, I'll be able to get more done. Since soccer was taking up 2 nights every week, and since I don't clean on Sunday's (it's my one day to relax).

Here is my theory (that I'm really hoping works)...If I just keep putting things off, then our baby will put off being born. Since I really want him to stay in there for a little while, then I just keep putting things off. And since these last weeks go by SO SLOW, then maybe I'll have enough time to do everything I need to. But maybe I should really get started getting ready this week.

This morning we had our 36 week check-up. From last Thursday (when I was Dilated to a 0, and 0% effaced) to today, I have progressed a little bit (dilated to a 1-1 1/2, 50% effaced). However, with my last 2 kiddos, this didn't mean anything, so I'm not too stressed, just decided I should probably at least get a car seat and pack for the hospital soon. Oh, and getting diapers might be a good idea too. And maybe I should wash all those baby clothes I have, and possibly even setup the cradle (although really, Erek could do that while I'm in the hospital, so that's not really at the top of my to do list).

Our little man is still moving around like crazy, and jabbing my ribs, as well as head butting the bladder, such a fun stage of pregnancy :). The good news....He is in the correct position for delivery, and now just putting on weight until it is time for him to come.

My little bully

Ok, I have to admit, I am completely clueless when it comes to handling bullies. I was never really bullied in school, and I never bullied anyone (I know, big shock cuz I'm so mean). My hubby was bullied in school, so I figured boys were just bullied, and it's just the way it is. So, ever since my son was probably 2, I've been talking about being bullied, and if a kid is mean to him, how to handle it. I never really got into too much detail, because, like I said, I just don't know a whole lot about the topic. Well, during all those talks, I never thought MY child would be the bully. Now I have a whole new problem, and still no clue how to handle it.

A couple of weeks ago I got a call from the office that my son just took off from school, and they couldn't find him. At least that wasn't him being a bully, right. So we talked about how that's not safe, blah blah blah. The next day, when his dad picked him up, he was throwing rocks at the school with a friend. So, his dad handled it in his own way ( I wasn't home, so I'm not sure what that consisted of).

Yesterday I got a call from his teacher saying Bredyn got in a fight on the playground with a couple of 4th graders, trying to take a ball from them. Seriously? 4th graders? Does the kid want to get killed? Not the smartest thing to do. Then today, I got a call from the principal, yes the principal this time, that my son took some kids hall pass and flushed it down the toilet, traumatizing the poor little boy. First, why in the world would u flush a hall pass down the toilet? How big are those things?

The problem is, for those who know Braedyn, this is SO not like him. He is such a sweet kid. At parent teacher conferences, the teachers always rave about how good of a kid he is and how they wish they had more like him in their class. He is always so helpful, friendly, etc. Sadly, I would expect this from Brock, and we've been working on getitn ghim to NOT be a bully (to his brother or other kids) because we're pretty sure it's gonna be a problem with him as soon as he goes to Preschool.

So, if anyone has any advice on how in the world to nip this in the butt right now before he becomes the bully of the school, I would love to hear the advice.

First Grade

We are now officially 2 weeks into the first grade. And already, I am not ready to be back to school. Braedyn loves school. He loves the whole social aspect (he is a major social butterfly), and being able to hang out with kids his age all day. I like having him out of the house, so I can work without all the noise. But the homework is definitely MORE than I ever imagined. I'm sure I NEVER had this much homework in 1st grade. And why is it that the only homework he has is the stuff he has a really hard time with---writing.

Every night consists of 1-2 hours of homework, which does not make Brock very happy either. His homework includes Math, Spelling, a worksheet (of writing words and numbers with correct letter formation, and spacing), reading, and anything he didn't finish in school that day (unfortunately, since he is a social butterfly, the school work turns into homework way too often). The reading is a breeze to him (which only takes 15 minutes a night). But everything else, since it involves writing, takes a very LONG time. If he could just spell the words by saying the letters, it would take like 2 seconds per word. Since he actually has to write them, and make the letters legible, it takes 2+ minutes per word.

How sad is it that I got stuck on his math homework tonight? I have taken Colelge Algebra, College Trigonometry, and Math for Elementary Teachers 1 & 2, but I had no idea what the teacher was asking for. He was to "Draw a repeating pattern" which I believe is like "red, yellow, green, red, yellow, green...". Then he was supposed to "draw a growing pattern". What in the heck is that? I made something up, but the teacher will likely think I am a sad parent, and no wonder my child can't do math with a parent like me. If you know what a growing pattern is, please enlighten me, because I thought of many different ideas of what it could be, but I don't know if any of them are correct, and I'm sure the one he did is probably wroong, but at least I tried :).

Who knew 1st grade homework would stump a College Grad?
